Things What I Am Working On
Feb. 25th, 2006 11:02 pm* book review: The World of Chaucer (for the Ironstar, the local SCA newsletter)
* book review: Daily Life in the Middle Ages and Daily Life in the Late Middle Ages (also for the Ironstar; very different books, both interesting, but it'll be a cool compare & contrast)
* book review: Gonne Porn book (for the Ironstar, and for the Compagnie mailing list)
* name project: Names from Dorset, 1453-1460 (had a couple people look at it and it's pretty good, but I need to try to sort out what more of the names mean)
* name project: Given Names from Les noms des Juifs de France au Moyen Age (I'll be collecting the data using Microsoft Access, not because I think it's a great program, but because learning how to use it will be a Good Job Thing)
* name project: Given Names from Etymologisches Worterbuch der Deutschen Familiennamen: A Sampling (since entering the whole thing is quite literally going to take me years, I'm going to stop at the end of the B names and get the article out. And then revise it every once in a while, as I add more names.)
* learning: read through all the tutorials in Corel Draw, especially the ones about using colour
* learning: read through all the tutorials in Corel PhotoPaint
* learning: one of the temp agencies I'm registered with has a lot of free online training stuff; I ain't stupid, so I'm going to take advantage of it
* arts/web project: updating my Russian Embroidery web page from a gazillion years ago, with all-new scans
* learning: find a good HTML tutorial and read through the whole thing
* learning: find a good shell script tutorial and read the whole thing
* article: revise and send off 'seeds' article for Witchvox
I know I'm missing things, too...
Why do I set all these tasks for myself JUST WHEN I'VE GOT A JOB?
Afore y'all get too excited: It's a temp job. But possibly temp-to-hire, so. I'm hopin.
Edit:
* do herbal stuff for a baby-shower-oid thing for someone non-LJ-enabled (at least not to my knowledge)

That pretty much describes the weekend.
Friday night was dinner with Jodi at a lovely little Mexican place called Tortilla Flat. We only got a little wet going in, but on the way back out to the car it was raining pretty hard. What with the chill and the big drops of rain and the fact that I was feeling like crap already, I was about shaking by the time we got back to the car.
Getting home helped with that, and we packed up for the weekend, and went to bed early. To little avail; I didn't sleep a lot, again, and waking up at 5:30 was...unpleasant. We packed Christina and Alis and
amykb in the van and headed south, and I slept nearly the entire ride.
Site was...wet. And troll wasn't open yet, as the troll hadn't shown up; the poor deputy autocrat was busily trying to run troll without half of what she needed. She did okay, and we got trolled in.
fosveny disappeared to the unbelts meeting and I helped Gwenllian get the consult table set up. Things were pretty quiet for a while, then the fencers moved into the building we were in because it was just too damn wet outside. Which was nice; we had something to watch without it being too loud. The heavy fighters were outside, though.
amykb wound up pulling an A&S display basically out of her butt; we have no idea who was supposed to run it, or if anyone even had been assigned to. It went pretty well, though. I put my braies in, and Christina put in her hood.
I'd forgotten my pattens, by the way...I wasn't going to wear my shoes without my pattens, and I wasn't about to wear by chausses without my shoes...so I ran around in a tunic and my shorts all day. Barefoot, mostly. I felt like a git, but all my other options were worse. Really, I felt crappy enough, especially earlier in the day, that I thought about just going _back_ out to the van to sleep.
*sighs*
But it wasn't so bad, really. I stayed inside for nearly the whole day. I did some heraldry, and spun some buffalo fur that Evil Kirsten handed me. (Using a pen for a spindle, as I hadn't anything else...) Christina announced that she was sick of not having anything to do as deputy exchequer, so she wanted to learn heraldry instead. I taught her basic blazon stuff, and she picked it up _really_ quickly, especially given how scattered I was teaching...Gwenllian taught her some basic conflict checking stuff, too, and she seems pretty enthused. I'm gonna recommend to Britt that she take her as a deputy.
I got to hang out with
chargirlgenius and meet Henry and
jljonsn and
alienor and
melaniesuzanne, and I hope I wasn't babbling so badly I scared the latter three off. Henry's way cute, though.
Missed part of court for shopping, since the rain had finally slowed. Indulged in retail therapy involving blue/purple mugs and a bowl. Almost bought a whole lot of cool wood stuff from Spanish Peacock, but didn't, owing to lack of cash. Got back to court in time to watch Marietta da Firenze get a Silver Crescent. Helped clean up some afterwards (the only thing I did to help out D&R, I'm afraid) and then we packed up and headed out.
The hotel sucked, and that's all I'm sayin'. Breakfast was fine once we got there. Home, and catching up on a few computer things, and then much napping. And then sleep. Gods, I was tired. Still am. Might nap this afternoon, though some writing is actually happening so maybe not...

Reading back through...
Feb. 1st, 2005 08:58 pmInstead of vacuuming the cat, I've decided to read through my entire LJ and see what I wrote a while ago that strikes my fancy, or doesn't make sense any more, or something.
( Nostalgia, or something. )
Everything newer than that is new enough that I don't want to comment on it again...
I suppose I ought to have done this post about a month ago, actually, or in two weeks when I'll have had this journal for a year. But now's when I did it, so too bad.

I suppose I ought to have done this post about a month ago, actually, or in two weeks when I'll have had this journal for a year. But now's when I did it, so too bad.
We went out for a bit before it got back, to pick up salt (though I think it's too cold for it to work) and a new ballast for the light in the kitchen. The ride home was...entertaining. I'm glad I'm good at sliding.
The cars are parked across the street, and nobody has parked in front of our house yet. With lots of luck, it'll stay that way, and they'll plow up to the curb on our side since there are no cars there. Sometimes it works, and when it does, it saves us a lot of effort - all we have to do is get the cars out instead of digging whole parking spots.
We're in for the duration, now. Got plenty of food (had plenty of food anyway, but I picked up some fresh stuff yesterday) and plenty to do. I un-moderated the Eisental list, since there are likely to be a lot of people snowed in, bored and chatting on the list. With luck things will remain polite; they have been since I laid down the law on Monday.
We'll likely get some cleaning done (time for the tree to come down) and copy more of Jae's resources. Maybe take a nap or two. It's time for those weights Lewis got for Christmas to come out...though, with shoveling to do, I'm thinking we should take it fairly easy on the things. Or, for that matter, on ourselves.
Time, too, to get moving again on one or another of the heraldry projects I have going. The Geirr-Bassi project is now in
giselle0002's hands for proofing, and to see if my decisions on which name should go where make any sense. I may start on Brechenmacher again; the Catalan names project is closer to being done, but I need a native French speaker for that one soon.
And time to pay attention to the cats. Yes, I do that anyway...but more is better, ya know? One of these days I ought to get pictures of the lot of them up somewhere...
I put cat food on the back stoop, too. Any feral who's survived the rest of this week, in the snow and cold, deserves an easy meal.
It doesn't look like it's snowing very hard. Little tiny flakes, hardly enough to diminish my range of vision when I look outside. But it's piling up. I think we're past two inches now, and it's supposed to snow more heavily later on.
There are still people out on the road. Go home. Whatever it is, it's almost certainly not worth it. If nobody's gonna die if you don't go, don't go.
Time to shovel again, I think.

Pneumonia, and chicken soup
Jan. 17th, 2005 06:19 pmNo, it's not _really_ pneumonia. But it sure feels like it.
Napped at least a little every day since Tuesday. Sometimes a lot. Slept through half of the Shire revel on Saturday, which fortunately caused me to miss little. Yes, I _was_ awake for Lewis getting his Ironstar. Just not moving any.
Survivede the Obligatory Family Birthday Thing yesterday with only minimal grumpitude. My mom got me a trash can. :) Now, this really is good - one of ours got run over by a truck or something a while ago. I love my mommy.
Lewis's mom, in the meantime, is _still_ grumbling over the Clearly Non-Suitable things I bipped for the bridal shower they insisted I have. Hey, we _needed_ flashlights, and some more surge protectors, and that set of screwdrivers... *sigh* She's promised she'll eventually get us something 'more meaningful' as a wedding present. I live in fear.
But it was generally non-awful. Woke up today feeling nearly human, and now Lewis has got it - sore through, coughing, general urk. He took the day off and has napped twice so far. He sounds like he's feeling a bit better but we're so not going to practice.
Talked to Geno and Lisa about Entertaining Shire Things. :P
Lewis went over to Jodi's parents Friday night (I stayed home so as not to be communicable at them) and fixed their new surround-sound thingy, so they sent him home with chicken soup. We thawed it, adulterated it slightly (garlic, oregano, orzo) and are eating it for dinner. Just _breathing_ the steam is making my throat feel better.
I'm not _done_ my novel, but I finally finished the Big Ending Scene in a fit of creativity far later than I wanted to be awake Thursday night. I haven't even re-read it yet; it may still suck rocks. If I keep it, it will inspire another fit of re-writing to wedge in the motive the Bad Guy has suddenly acquired. If, that is, said motive makes any sense whatsoever when I read it over in a week or two.
So instead I have spent the day working on collating commentary for Gwenllian-who-I-have-probably-misspelled. That's now done and sent off. Not as tough as I'd thought, but I didn't do any preliminary decisions. Not the way I'm feeling. Maybe next time...
So I think I'm going to pull up the short story I finished a while ago, rip it apart, and re-do the whole thing, since it's rather lacking in actual conflict and the ending sucks rocks. We'll see.

Jan. 4th, 2005 09:51 pmHaving been provoked into posting, here I sit.
It's been, um. When did I post last?
( Occurs to me I ought to cut all this... )
That's all I can think of. Brain's a little full. Sorry for scattered-ness.

Yeah, it's been a while...
Dec. 9th, 2004 09:56 amI've been a tad bit busy.
( Thanksgiving, and Darkover )
The next few days are a blur of me being behind on sleep, generally not feeling good, failing to write, and dealing with a selection of relationship issues. Oh, and work. We had last weekend off, thank all the gods, and mostly slept though we got a few things done. Baking occurred which is always happy. Got a bit more writing done, though I'm not happy with my progress, and did a lot of market research. Somewhere in there I got ideas for three more short stories, which can interlock though they don't have to.
Long long talk with Lewis last night that I think was pretty productive. Off today and tomorrow; tomorrow night is the shower my mom insisted on having for me even though I'm already bloody married. Well, it's a free dinner and I'm bringing
giselle0002 to keep me sane so I think I'll survive. Company dinner Saturday night, and I don't think we have anything else planned for the weekend.

Winter Wolf
Nov. 7th, 2004 09:48 amSpent yesterday at the Von Halstern Winter Wolf Tournament. A _lot_ of fun, more than I'd expected.
( Winter Wolf )
Lewis is on his way to the Wreath meeting; I felt far too much like crap to want to go. Feel bad about that, but, well. Spent the night sneezing _and_ coughing which means I likely caught another cold on top of the first one. Probably going to take a nap at some point today. Yurgh.
