[ A rectangular piece of embroidery; the background is deep forest green, with two simple crossed trumpets in yellow. In blazon: Vert, two straight trumpets in saltire, bells in chief, Or. ]

So I’ve barely been able to really be _in_ the SCA in … a long while. It’s been five years since I lived close enough to a local group to be able to so much as go to fighter practice, & even before then, in Dragonsspine & Hartshorndale, I was too busy just surviving to be able to really be _involved_. I got to plenty of events, but always as a merchant. Not that merchants aren’t ever part of the community that makes up the SCA — most of us _are_ — but there’s still a gap there, especially when you’re the only one running the booth & can’t make it to classes. Or go watch the fencing. Or go to court to watch a friend get an award, especially when they put court up against the local version of Midnight Madness. & I’ve been missing all of that, a LOT.

So when it was announced that a friend would be getting her Pelican at Pennsic, & that a bunch of embroidery would need to be done, I JUMPED on that. I think I was the first one who asked, actually, which gave me my pick of what to embroider, so of COURSE I picked the heralds’ badge.

(& then it took me forEVer to actually get it done, because of Things & also I volunteered to sew a tunic for her as well, but I got it all done in time, if barely)

The SCA, despite the presence of merchants, runs on something much closer to a gift economy than on it does on anything like capitalism. I didn’t get paid for my work, either in money or in anything else. Eventually the energy I put into the embroidery (& the tunic) will make its way back around to me — & yes, that sounds pretty woo, but I mean it in a pretty literal sense here — & in the meantime, while I haven’t benefited financially, I’ve definitely gained some esteem in the eyes of those who know that I did the work (although that miiiight be a bit less than it would have been had I gotten everything done sooner!).

I really do prefer a gift economy — I’d love to be able to set up my booth & just leave it there, secure in the knowledge that people wouldn’t take more than was reasonable, & that I could, in turn, access the necessities of living as I needed them, & the small luxuries as I wanted them, within reason. But … here we are.

(I’m not looking for arguments about the perceived benefits and/or necessity of capitalism; take that somewhere else. I _will_ say that plenty of human societies have run just fine on gift economies, & if we’ve done it before, I don’t see why we can’t do it again)

[ A round marquee tent, taller and narrow than usual, and made from very pale green canvas instead of the standard white. It’s decorated with painted details along all the vertical seams. ]

Check it OUT. Every once in a while you see someone in the SCA who’s painted their tent, & even more rarely you see canvas that isn’t the standard white, but most SCA events are seas of white canvas dotted with bright modern dome tents.

I’d LOVE to see more of this.

2023-07-02 09.46.13

[ It’s a closer view of the same tent, from a slightly different angle that shows more of the painted canvas. A line of red, stylized stems runs up each seam; green leaves are stamped in threes at the end of each stem. In between, in the center of each length of canvas, is a vertical design in gold paint. Stylized trees rise from the bottom of the canvas, red trunks with green leaves. ]

DAMN. I WANT one.

I also wondered where it was from, because even when you do see painted tents in the SCA, they’re an entirely different style. Was it from another group like the SCA? A reenactor’s group? A really awesome LARP that I’d really like to start going to?

2023-07-02 09.45.58

[ Even closer, it’s visible that the design has seen some wear, but most of the painted details are still very clear. ]

Across the way was another tent, a standard SCA square marquee, with a guy sitting in a comfortable looking chair out front. He looked up from his book long enough for us to have a chat and for Loiosh to get a thorough petting, & he solved the mystery: this tent was one of a WHOLE LOT of tents made for the most recent movie version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Which explains the details, & also the height — something something camera something something, anyway.

2023-07-02 09.46.03

[ Even closer, focusing on the foliage up each seam. There’s red berries among the green leaves! ]

I wonder where the rest of the tents wound up, & how I can get hold of one of them …

Of course I went digging through stills from the movie to find it. & after very little searching, there it is!

The-Chronicles-of-Narnia-The-Lion-The-Witch-The-Wardrobe-the-chronicles-of-narnia-26558876-1920-816

[ A still from the movie. A broad dirt road crosses through the center, from upper left to lower right; beings of many species walk along it. The grass on either side of the path holds many tents, most round, many of them red, all of them decorated. One tent, towards the front, is circled in red. ]

… I think I’d want one of the red ones. Which one do you want?

[ Loiosh, an orange tabby wearing a green harness with a blue bow tie, is flopped on the van’s front passenger seat. He’s staring straight at the camera, whiskers perked forward, one ear slightly off to the side. ]

So. Happy. To be going to war again. Just the happiest boy.

2023-06-27 13.00.30

[ Nearly the same picture, except this time he’s making blinky eyes at the camera. ]

He spent more time in the tent than I’m used to, but, well, he’s fifteen. He sleeps more than he used to. It’ll happen. He was still happy to be able to sleep IN A TENT. AT WAR.

He was also horrible & knocked shit over while he was in there, which was pretty reassuring, tbh.

2023-06-27 19.22.38

[ Loiosh stands on a low wood table sitting inside a canvas tent. He’s looking pointedly at the camera, probably because right next to him is a basket with cans of gooshyfood. ]

We wandered site, we took classes (he was VERY patient, by which I mean he slept through them all), we caught part of court (he hung out with someone else’s kid), we spent time with his people.

2023-06-30 14.03.15

[ He’s standing in low grass inside what’s obviously a big common pavilion. There’s a couple chairs lined up against the wall, one right next to his stroller, but the only human in the picture is outside, only visible through the opening in the tent wall. He still looks pretty happy. ]

We even got stolen away & marched with the Faery Rade, but I didn’t get any pictures of that. Apparently cameras don’t work well with the fae. It was fun, though, been a while since we got to do that.

[ My face. I look distressed. Behind me is the back of the van, which has a fair amount of stuff in it. but you can still see out the back. ]

YES Battlemoor was like two months ago, WHAT OF IT.

Anyway I admit I was kinda concerned when we left, on account of I could see out the back & when you’re heading for War that means you forgot stuff. Which was kinda true, I didn’t bring the booth, but I MEANT to not bring the booth, so.

Also I didn’t take many pictures, but more because my phone ran out of battery than anything else, welp.

There was a Storm of Great Ferocity and Note (hail version):

2023-06-30 14.02.56

[ Grass, mostly green, some brown. There’s a whole lotta hail in it; the closer stuff looks to be a quarter to a half inch. Further away it drifts into piles a couple inches deep. ]

Sitting in camp, watching everyone attending court stuff themselves into the tent with the royalty, is pretty amusing, especially when you’re in a nice not-crowded tent across the street. Not that we could hear anything, but we couldn’t anyway.

I took three classes! Or possibly four, I am not sure! I learned how to make a Norse bone flute! Check it out, it looks awesome.

[ A bone flute, maybe eight inches long; it has five finger holes, then another hole further up (apparently that’s called the window). There’s an X carved into the bone above the finger holes. ]

I need to explain that I didn’t do ANY of the work that’s visible in that picture; the teacher had already cleaned the bones, cut them to length, & bored all the holes. All we had to do was stuff some beeswax into the end you blow in, to make the right shape for sound to happen.

I spent THREE HOURS messing with the beeswax. I got either no sound at all, or occasional, really breathy high-pitched whistles, which then immediately went away when I poked at the beeswax again, or even looked at it funny.

[ The flute, seen from the end. There’s a wodge of beeswax shoved into the hole; it’s mostly at the bottom of the hole, but there’s a bit up the sides. ]

… you may note that I didn’t say I MADE a beeswax flute. That’s because I didn’t. After messing with it for THREE HOURS, the teacher took pity on me & the other three people who hadn’t either gotten a nice tone or given up, & handed us perfectly functional bone flutes.

Wouldn’t even take money for materials. Bless that guy.

Why do they look forward to fighter practice so much when they’re just gonna sleep through it?

Of course they napped most of the afternoon both days at Crown; they’re cats.

Tom was so out he let me hold paws for a while. He isn’t always in the mood for that, but he’s getting more patient with it.

[ A closeup of Loiosh’s face — he’s an orange tabby wearing a green harness. His eyes are a pale green, most of his whiskers are white, and he’s got a couple black spots on his pink nose. ]

Loiosh found a new perch at Crown. Slightly to my surprise, cos I’ve been using this setup for a while. Nice spot, though.

But what’s that he’s standing on, you ask?

More standing IN, as it happens.

I gave up on bringing cat water bowls along to events years ago, because Loiosh always just drank out of my water mug. This weekend at Outlands Crown, Tom discovered that this works just fine for him, too.

[ Major Tom, a big grey tabby wearing a purple harness, is sitting in a wooden box. His back is to the camera and his ears are stuck out to the sides. ]

Major Tom is a big, strong, independent tomcat, who disdains the need for effete things like petting, cuddles, & security blankets.

… except that I’m totally lying. One day last week, he stood at the door & yowled until Jasper stuck a harness on him, then, apparently pleased with that & not needing an actual walk, wandered off & curled up to nap.

I found him a while later, curled up in a box, quite happy. I guess he just wanted to wear his harness for a while?

[ Major Tom, a big grey tabby wearing a purple harness, is flopped in a blue cat stroller, looking off to the left. His ears are at slightly skeptical angles, but his eyes and whiskers are relaxed. ]

The boys have been going to A LOT of fighter practices recently. Even Tom is getting used to it.

He fell asleep after a while, but then he woke up again & tried to climb into someone’s sword bag, so, uh, that’s a thing that happened.

Loiosh? Fell asleep to the dulcet tones of ringing swords.

20210921_184224

[ Loiosh, a orange tabby, is laying atop the unfolded roof of the same stroller, head tucked to the side, eyes closed, one paw draped gently over the edge. ]

They don’t share the cat stroller very well — unless they’re not in the same part of it. & Loiosh is plenty small enough to be comfortable on the roof of the thing. Tom likes it when the roof’s closed overhead anyways, he’s always loved a good cave, so it works for both of them.

… that said? Yeah, a bigger cat stroller is DEFINITELY gonna be needed.

How is this my LIFE.

What with one thing & another yesterday (by which I mean my apparently unorthodox method of getting the new washer into the house) I was telling my roommate Inoru about other things I’ve done that … perhaps reflect a nonstandard risk assessment on my part. award2

As with so many things, he started young.

He was just a couple months old when Queen Astrid met him & immediately fell in love. In the meantime I’m pretty sure I was getting gently scolded for not being at Midwinter where my Argent Hart was actually awarded. I explained that I had really wanted to attend, but I’d been working. In Hell. It was Walmart; close enough.

Much later, while living in Dragonsspine, Loiosh got into what would be a bad habit for anyone not as cute as he is.

Just LOOK how pleased he is with himself. Lil shit.

Fortunately everyone thought it was adorable. Both times. As witness:

& then a Battlemoor or so later …

Why yes, that IS one of the thrones of the Outlands.

Fortunately Queen Danielle, like her distant ancestor Queen Astrid, loves him.

I didn’t take these last two pics. I’m pretty sure I was facepalming, & also planning how to survive charges of lèse-majesté. Because it’s not like anyone’s gonna blame the CAT.

IT TURNS OUT that if you use right-angle thingers & clamps to hold your 2×2 pieces together, & then GLUE them into place, & ONLY THEN do you drill the pilot holes & put in the wood screws, it works a WHOLE LOT BETTER.

My friend Ivar, who makes excellent pottery, took this picture of Hades, & I think it sums up both Hades’ natural magnificence, & also his truly spectacular talent at getting himself ENTIRELY TANGLED.

In any case, I usually don’t take a lot of Hades pictures because he’s a longhaired black cat & pretty often winds up being a fluffy blot, but I got a LOT of good Hades pictures this Battlemoor.
