IT TURNS OUT that if you use right-angle thingers & clamps to hold your 2×2 pieces together, & then GLUE them into place, & ONLY THEN do you drill the pilot holes & put in the wood screws, it works a WHOLE LOT BETTER.

… it also turns out that the stuff I learned from my dad, while very useful for house-building, missed a lot of information when it comes to putting together things smaller than houses. >.>

BUT HEY. I’m getting there. & it’s good to know that when basically everything else I’ve made out of wood has turned out funky & not fitting together quite right, it isn’t because I’m just bad at it, it’s because I’m not using the right tools.

Like right-angle thingers & clamps & glue.

Also, wood screws that are FOR DEFINITELY long enough to not come right back out. Like these.

Yep, those are some long wood screws. There's also a bit of 2x2 wood & a drill with the appropriate drill bit for the screws.

See? IT WORKS

Two vertical pieces of wood 2x2, with two shorter 2x2 pieces fixed between them. All the right angles are actually right angles. How bout THAT.

I used some older, more interesting wood for the shelves themselves …

Three 1x3 boards, of old, weathered wood, lined up parallel to each other.

LOOK at the grain.

A closeup of the weathered wood, showing the grain.

They’re sturdy enough to hold Major Tom! Complete with Loioshbutt photobomb.

The completed shelves, with Major Tom sitting on them, looking quite pleased, & Loiosh's tail in the extreme foreground.

TOM STOP THAT

Why YES that's Major Tom sharpening his claws on my BRAND NEW SHELVES

EEE, cats! :D

(Also, *facepalm* Cats. I have to cover things I do not want Jess to scratch with either fabric she doesn't like scratching or tape with sticky side out. Not useful for tops of shelves, though.)

Intended use?

How much weight will the shelves hold? Rough estimate?

That is amazing!

I'd love to make something similar for myself. What size are the support pieces (the hinged thing)?

I'm one of those people who is frightened of power tools. I can cut two-by-twos with a hand saw, I hope. Lots of other issues, but I'm determined to learn SOME woodworking skills.

Considering that I have never built anything with wood, YES, please, instructions would be deeply appreciated, as detailed as you like!

I need to be able to lift things and move them on my own, and I need a cane for balance, which means that trying to move a regular two-drawer file cabinet, empty, takes serious thought and planning how to approach the problem.

Those are still beautiful shelves. Most desks are too high for me, so I'm thinking of working from the desk-height I want for the top shelf, 27", and a 3" toe kick under the bottom shelf, which would put the shelves 12" apart vertically. That means making the shelves no wider than 10-11" to keep from causing a jam when trying to fit them in. (The plan is to make the middle and lower shelves with very little overhang, but put the desktop across two supports, with a knee gap.)

Given the stability issue (I can trip over air molecules, and lean on furniture A LOT!), I'm thinking that the wider part of the Vs will face the wall, with the spine toward me, leaving a smaller gap between the supports, since I'm not likely to kick the back uprights on either side, even with a narrow desk sized for my laptop.

Much appreciated!

How do you know how much weight it will hold? More math?

So if I lean on it, I'm more likely to tip it than break it. GOOD to know!

And books are heavy!

Oh, that is a funny image!

I'm more likely to FALL on it while trying! LAUGH.
