Friday was...busy.
Saturday, journaling during class
So it turns out that Lewis is much more susceptible to altitude sickness than I am. We drove up to the Alpine gift shop and snack bar (12,000 feet or so). There was a trail up to the summit, but by the time we were done lunch and I'd shopped Lewis had a headache, his lungs were burning, and he was feeling pretty nauseated, so we stuck him in the car and drove the hell downhill.
He started feeling better pretty quickly, but when we stopped at a historic homestead site he didn't feel up to walking the half mile out to the old buildings. So I left him talking to the ranger and walked out by myself. Partway down there was a little side trail to a lovely little stream. I took off my shoes and stuck my feet in for a bit. The water was very cold and felt very good.
The main trail went over the stream shortly later, and I discovered that this lovely little stream is actually the Colorado.
About then Lewis went tooling past on a golf cart. They keep it around for people who don't walk so well, which under the circumstances included Lewis. So we toured the cabins together. It was a homestead originally, started by a German family who missed their original home in the Black Forest (and had had to close their tavern in Denver due to Prohibition). Eventually they opened a dude ranch and built more cabins.
By the time we were done with that Lewis was feeling okay enough to walk back. We drove the rest of the way, out of the park and to the south, eventually making our way back out to Denver and back to the hotel.
Dinner happened at some point but I don't remember a thing about it. I was totally exhausted and went to bed before nine. Lewis finally came in at one and I'd already gotten some sleep. Rare...but I'm hoping it lasts.
Felt much better the next day. We went to the Waffle House for breakfast with
baronadhemar. After a bit I ran out to the post office (which I did eventually find) to mail a postcard to
ohiblather for her collection.
Then there was a long period of sitting around in the lobby while heralds trickled in. Pelican showed up and promptly collected a bunch of armory heralds to talk about some decisions she hadn't got a lot of commentary on. Shortly afterwards Elisabeth Laurel stole Lewis to talk about OSCAR.
meradudd called from Tal and Joe's around then, and I wound up heading there for a couple hours. They have dogs and a cat and some land and a nice little house. They're both very nice. Joe drove us up a dirt (and rock) road to a beautiful little spot in the woods, with trees and a stream. Very cold, again, but it felt very nice on my feet when I waded across.
We had a nice dinner in Allenspark (I think, anyway). I had a mini-pizza. Eventually I drove Tim back to the hotel.
We were late for the social, but oh well. Gave Tim his 'I'm the evil twin' t-shirt and he and Lewis made their entrance into the social. It's a pity this isn't on the East Coast; not enough people got it. But it was still fairly amusing.
None of us stayed at the social for too long; it was very hot. I wound up in Adhemar's room with Tim and Eldrich, talking about anime and gaming and the harvest and politics and history. Eventually sleep occurred, though not enough.
The first class today was on beginning scribing. I didn't learn a lot but the overview was nice, and the handout is excellent. So, motivation, if nothing else.
This one's an interkingdom anthopology run by Elisabeth and Francois. Interesting, intermittently amusing, though Daniel keeps trying to raise the 'no honorable lordship' flag and people keep sidetracking the conversation before it gets ugly.
post-lunch, another class
Lunch in the steakhouse attached to the hotel. Some of the best chicken alfredo I've ever had. The class about to start is on doing a period signature. I don't have a proper pen, so it's purely theoretical for me. Still ought to be cool, though.
Nota bene: Turns out that part of Lewis not feeling good was a cold he's been dealing with for the past couple weeks, so with luck next time will be better for him. And yes, that's the mighty Colorado _River_ I was talking about...
