As with my trip to the Keys, I wrote a lot in a paper journal, and I'm going to transcribe it here, bit by bit...

Longmont, Colorado - Wednesday, July 20

I'd forgotten the feel and the scent of the air out here. I've never been to Colorado before, no; but I've been to Idaho and Wyoming and in some ways it's very similar. Much more civilized than anywhere I was on my last trip to the West, though.

People want to have green lawns out here. This means they have to run the sprinklers pretty much every night. It's an insane waste of water in a palce where water is nearly as precious as it is in Key West - fresh water, that is.

We passed a lot of small oil wells. I was a bit surprised; I didn't know there was oil up here.

We're in the hotel and it's pretty damn late Eastern time. Getting up at six didn't suck as much as it could have, and we got on the road right at seven. The drive and the airport were fairly featureless.

I spent part of the flight reading The Phantom Tollbooth, some of it reading The Other Erin's work (did a crit for the short story, just read through the beginning of her novel; I'll crit it properly later), some of it writing (on the back of one of Erin's stories, as I didn't bring a journal). Lewis slept, and then spent a lot of time talking to the woman in the seat next to him. I talked to her some, too. Nice lady, teaches English; she's out here for a conference of some sort. Gave us ideas for tourist-style things to do.

The descent was rocky and I actually felt pretty sick, which hasn't ever happened to me on an airplane before. I'm still feeling reasonably loopy hours later, though I'm not sure if it's that or the altitude.

There are mountains out here. Real ones. It's been far too long.

Lews hasn't ever seen big mountains from the ground before, though he's flown over the Rockies. (I'm envious; I never have...)

So I bought four journals - four mini-Moleskines in a pack to carry around, and a Moleskine-sized one (though another brand) with nice paper and a really neat cover. Now all I need is pens worthy of them (this one is pretty, but that's all I can say for it) and a writing hand that doesn't cramp up so quickly...

Nota bene: they weren't oil wells, they were water wells. They _looked_ like oil wells...

And it turns out it was the motion sickness; it was gone by the next day.
