You can't just go to the grocery store and _buy_ guacamole, can you...?

I think so... but would you really want to?

I don't mind guac, but it's not my fave thing in the world. Given the choice of nacho toppings, I prefer cheese, black beans, refried beans, meat/chix, and certain southwest spices.

Go ahead and take my share. ;)
PS - have you tried looking in the specialty foods aisle?

Look in the refrigerated section where they keep sour cream, and onion dip, and so on. At least, that's where it usually is down here. You can sometimes find something that's a little higher up the scale to reality in frozen foods — but then you have to wait for it to thaw. If you don't have a restaurant you can get takeout from, making your own really is your best option.

Well, I can buy it here. But I'm in a 3rd world state.

But you can get all those East Coast things I can't.

I can buy it (or at least something pretty close) at the supermarket here or in the Shuk, along with lots of other related things (Eggplant salads of several forms, hummus, etc). We have a great salad guy in the shuk in Jerusalem.

We also get the world's best Pita :)

I will admit that cheesesteaks are one of the few really non kosher foods that I miss from the old days. I keep thinking about trying to fake it with mushrooms marinated in a steak sauce and grilled.

Trader Joe's has it. Pretty good, too. I don't remember where you live, though.

I'll find out exactly where when my friends come back from their X-country trip. Can we organize an expedition? I've never been and I hear it's very cool.

In other food supply news, there's this place which is billed as The Most Amazing Food Store in the World by the guy who writes the chowhound blog. It's International Food Warehouse (370 Essex St, Lodi, NJ; 201-368-9511). You can read the write up on it at http://www.chowhound.com/dinner/dinner.html

After his description I'd want to go see it even if I was fasting.
