Short-short version: Yes, we were supposed to be home by now. No, we're not. Yes, the cats are fine.
Yesterday morning they told Lewis he was going to have to stay another day. Yesterday afternoon he realized that we still get the military rate at the hotel even if we stay extra. So now we're staying until Sunday and, since there are no flights out of Key West, we'll be driving up the Keys on Sunday to fly out of Ft. Lauderdale around seven.
However, we haven't got there yet in the updatage...this is all still from the handwritten journal I've been carrying around everywhere.
11, having just missed the shuttle into town, sitting in the lobby, Wednesday
So, having finally got here, we settled into the room. I seem to be girly this week - I changed into a skirt for dinner last night, and I'm wearing one again today. We went to Benihana for dinner. It was...interesting. The menu is clearly aimed at a far more 'mundane' crowd than most hibachi places I've been to. No sushi, no edamame, just a lot fewer choices in general, and the stuff which was cut out all seemed to be the more 'Japanese' stuff.
The show was spectacular, easily the best I've ever seen. But Lewis and I could both tell that the guy was slumming. Not giving it his whole attention. Still, it was spectacular; I'd love to see him really on his game.
We sat with two couples from Staten Island and had a really good time. Not the kind of people I'd normally choose to hang out with, but sometimes it's nice just to pick someone different.
almost noon, just outside the hotel
I seem to have discovered a process by which, whenever I go to Key West, I turn into a girl. I have just purchased a handbag and a long, loose coverup thing. Effective a pair of wrap-pants. Rayon. Red and blue.
Very odd.
The hotel is currently chock-full of cops and gay people. Two different conventions. I think.
I still want to look for:
a hat, crushable, maybe one which will work with the hair-sticks;
more hair sticks;
gold coins for Derek;
prezzies for
giselle0002 and
meradudd;
cool small plates for home.
Shuttle's here, time to go. Meeting Lewis for lunch & Karen for dinner.
almost one, Mallory Square, perched on the seawall
Yes, the water really is that colour. Somehow I forget every time I leave, and I don't really remember until I'm back again.
I've purchased a hat (nothing was going to work with the hair sticks) and...a dress. Man, I don't know what it is...
I found Kenos, accidentally. Didn't buy anything. Everything I wanted needs to be tied on, which is why I never wear the sandals I got there last time.
There are chairs further back from the water but I just want to be here. I'd rather be on the water, really, but most any way to do that is really expensive...so I'll just sit here and watch. I've already spent more than I should have.
3-ish
Just missed the shuttle back to the hotel. Manifestly my timing sucks rocks.
Lunch with Lewis at the Hog's Breath. The chicken fingers were unexceptional, but the honey mustard was stunning. Apparently they make it right there.
Walked past the schooner America. She's beautiful. Two-hour sunset cruises for $75 a person. I'm giving it some thought.
Currently killing time (and drinking a mango daiquiri) in a bar called the Lazy Gecko. Little place, right next to Sloppy Joe's, and it also claims to be the southernmost Red Sox bar. I'll have to tell
liamstliam...
Twenty minutes until the shuttle comes. The way my feet feel, I should likely start walking now.
Commentary: Didn't get to see Karen that night; Lewis got out of work too late. We didn't get to go on the schooner, either. Something to save for next time...
In fact it's one convention: a Florida association of gay and lesbian police officers. Tonight they're doing karaoke. We're a little unnerved.

The picture of the sunset Lewis sent was spectacular. I showed it to David and we talked about it and sunsets in general and Key West in particular for a ful 10 minutes . . . nothing about Sheetz or the move or the house or anything . . . It was utterly amazing.
Enjoy your time down there, hon. Enjoy it a lot.
