...not actually happening, due to a report from the mechanic which included phrases like 'I didn't accelerate too hard on the test drive because I was concerned that the transmission would fall out, and that'd be embarrassing'.

SO. This has been a test of the Emergency Kate's Not Actually Buying A Truck System. If Kate had actually been buying a truck...well, the COMPLETELY TERRIFIED would have kept going for a couple days, I have little doubt.

Maybe next time I'll be less terrified. Also, if you're anywhere near Coal Township, PA, and you need to go to a mechanic, check out H&R Garage on Center Street. He's on the up-and-up. Plus he just saved my butt.

There are few things as happy-making as knowing a mechanic who will tell you the complete, unvarnished truth, rather than either try to sell you work, or just tell you it'll pass inspection again.

Not getting a truck is boo hiss, but not getting an expensive waste of time is epic win! I admit I worried a lot about that last point for you, so I'm just as glad you got an unequivocal answer on that before it was too late.

Honestly a lot of what I'm thinking right now is I wish the guy were closer, so it'd make sense to have him look at stuff for me again. (Actually, at what he charged me, it still might be worth the gas to get there...)

Oh, lordy, don't I know it! There are lots of things we'd like to run past Mama's mechanics, but Warsaw is more than just a bit of a haul from here... Fortunately we've got a small garage empire locally that isn't too bad on the whole, but still, some of those guys are definitely better than others.

Yeah, I mean, I got a local guy who's okay, but there's a pretty big gap between 'okay' and 'will note that he's worried the transmission will fall out'. (I'm still giggling over his phrasing, too.)

What montuos said. Last December I was delighted to find a decent mechanic who knows some of my relatives when my car conked out while visiting said relatives. It's extra-good to find someone who won't screw you simply because you have out-of-state license plates....

Good luck finding a better vehicle! I know I will have to do this eventually, since I just passed the 17th anniversary of my most recent car purchase. Oy.
