[ A paper bowl holds some unshelled peas; one has been opened, showing three peas inside, spaced so they look like scraggly teeth. ]

FIRST & FOREMOST, that’s not a mimic, it’s actually peas. Yes I’m sure, I ate them, they did not eat me. Yes, I WILL still be careful the next time I eat peas, you never know.

SECONDLY, I’m SO very glad my friend Dwen taught me about eating fresh peas a buncha years ago, because when Jasper & CJ brought some home from the farmers market last year, I knew immediately that the best thing to do was shell & eat them immediately. Which we’ve been doing ever since, all through fresh pea season.

They’re DELICIOUS.

(Hypothetically we COULD shell some, dry them, & save them for over the winter, but also, why would we do that, they’re DELICIOUS.)

(okay FINE we probably will at some point, if only so we can grow our own delicious fresh peas, but we gotta not EAT them all first & y’all, that’s HARD)

Hypothetically, I would actually buy a packet of seeds to plant next spring, because I'm not sure whether they're developed enough to sprout if they don't get to mature all the way on the vine. (Maybe talk to your farmers market supplier some about both sides of that statement?) And you will also need to give some deep thought towards how to keep varmints out of the plants, because apparently my brother and I are the only creatures on earth that dislike fresh green peas. Of all the peas I planted this year, only 1 vine was allowed to grow, and even that one got chewed off through the stem before it got going well.

I was thinking more in terms of "chickenwire* cage around everything" myself. You still need to enclose the plants or varmints can get to them regardless of whether they're in the ground or in pots. It's going to take more pea plants than you think it will to satisfy all y'all, even if you had the space and grow lights to do it more safely indoors. With only one plant, I was never able to get enough peas to do them as the vegetable for a single dinner; I think I recall seeing "4 plants per person" as the minimum target.

*Or ratwire, depending on how small your rodents are. Chickenwire should keep cats and bunnies out, but it won't even slow down small critters.
