So I find this page of pictures from the upcoming Pirates movie (yes, potential spoilers behind the link; click with care). I'm scrolling down through going 'ooh, yeah, this is pretty, oh doesn't she look hot in that outfit with the sword', and then I get to the picture that makes me go all gooshy.



No, not because of who it is. Yeah, there are people who think he's Teh Hawt; I'm not especially one. (Though he totally kicks Davy Jones's ass as the villain.

Not even the cannon, though, nice.

No, I went 'OMG linstock and slowmatch and they got it right!'

And that? Is hawt.

The thing in his hands, the stick with the rope wrapped around it? That's a linstock, and the rope is slow match.

It's what you use to touch off a cannon, or a period handgonne like I have. Slow match is a special rope soaked in stuff that makes it burn slow but steady, like incense. It's much safer around black powder than an open flame, easy to keep lit and handle under exciting conditions.
