short takes: finally, enough firewood

[ A pile of firewood, cut and chopped to the right size to fit in a standard wood stove, sits out in the front yard. Judging by the van behind it, it’s over six feet tall. There’s … there’s a lot of firewood there, is what I’m saying. ]

Much like last year, we’ve been working hard to keep up with the demands of staying warm. Unlike last year, we’re running two wood stoves. The up side is that we have decent insulation now, & with that, we’re running both stoves using barely more wood than we did last year, with one.

Down side? We didn’t manage to scavenge NEAR as much wood as we did last summer.

Up side? CJ passed his pharmacy tech test, got certified, & most importantly for the issue at hand, got a raise.

Which we immediately spent on firewood. Which, this year, came ALREADY CHOPPED.

Y’all who’ve done this? YOU GET IT.

This is two cords, which is gonna last us a WHILE. & when they’re gone? There’s more where they came from.

SUCH A RELIEF.

Umm... you should really stack those, or put them in a shed, so they stay dry. (I know that you shouldn't put a tarp over them because that has the opposite effect, since then the drier air can't get to them.)

yeah, we're working on it. little by little. remember it's pretty dry here - even soaked wood will dry in a day or two if it's inside or in the sun

Point... you're kind of the opposite of here. Here, we're lucky if it goes below 98% humidity, there you get around 2%...

I pick up a log to haul it inside, smack it against another one to knock the snow off, & it's pretty well dry. Weird, but damned useful.

You know, people pay extra for kiln dried logs which are run though a fancy dehumidifier... you've got one as big as the outdoors!

Thank you! I am very excited about the doors this certification should open! And yes, that stack should last us a good while, although we'll need about that much again, if not more, before we can retire the wood stoves for summer.

yeah now I just need to make soap & jewelry & keep myself & the boys fed & cut & paint plywood & get that on the walls up here & rearrange things so I can rearrange the kitchen downstairs & build a ramp for Jasper & also make his desk suck less &
