Nine Beginnings, Margaret Atwood

On writing, & writers:

"As a vocation, it involves the laying on of hands. You receive your vocation and in your turn you must pass it on. Perhaps you will do this only through your work, perhaps in other ways. Either way, you're part of a community, the community of writers, the community of storytellers that stretches back through time to the beginning of human society."

Some more on that at Terri Windling's blog, which I highly recommend anyways.

That's lovely. It doesn't always feel like that though. It's frequently lonely and being told "helpful" things like "oh, you're so good at comments be an editor instead!" and "I think podcasts are amazing write shit for podcasts instead of what you want to write" only make me feel more isolated.

Yes, you'd think writers would be more supportive but those are variants on things I have actually heard from other writers! Most of the other writers I knew have left fandom/LJ/the internet and for all I know writing in general as something else not worth continuing to invest in. And you're right, it's finding the connections that is important.

But, much as I hate and despise the fact it's Tumblr, I have connected with couple of people there who are writing both fanfic and original works and having conversations with them recently has really helped me feel more positive about getting back to some longer original works at some point this year :)
